Introduction to AIOps

Current challenges with IT organizations

For the last two decades, IT organizations have been struggling to keep the lights on and trying their best to keep up with the business. The digital transformation puts a lot of pressure on IT organizations to be more agile. IT organizations are adopting DevOps principles and practices to manage the situation. However, those are not enough due to the continuously increasing demand from business organizations, and they expect IT organizations to be more proactive and prescriptive to be more business competitive. Another critical challenge that IT organizations face is the complexity created due to the continuous adoption of business and IT operations technologies. These complexities come from the volume, variety, and velocity of IT data getting produced due to the regular activities.

AIOps Defined

AIOps (Algorithmic IT Operations) is a term coined by Gartner. It is defined as software systems that combine big data and AI or machine learning functionality to enhance and partially replace a broad range of IT operations processes and tasks. These tasks include availability and performance monitoring, event correlation and analysis, IT service management, and automation. By adopting and leveraging AIOps, IT organizations can automate and enhance IT operational practices and access continuous insight into their business services' performance. The primary objective of AIOps is to provide insights from the IT infrastructure using machine learning and reinforcement learning. IT operations teams can act upon these insights using cognitive automatons.

The key elements of AIOps

The AIOps is the next generation IT operations technology, and there are four key areas (1) Observe (2) Engage (3) Act, and (4) Govern. The "observe" component enhances the monitoring and helps IT organizations to find more meaningful insights about the problems. The IT operations team can use conversational and vision technology to improve "user engagements". Automation is the critical requirement for cost reduction, and the "act" component will help IT reach the next-level automation. Finally, "governance" and compliance can improve to the level best using predictive and prescriptive analytics.

How AIOps help you to evolve your IT operations?

The AIOps tools will not replace the current IT Operations tools. Instead, it enhances the current monitoring, log management, automation, and service desk tools. AIOps combine all the essential tools and help you retire from unwanted and legacy tools. It enables you with a flexible approach to assemble different partial and incomplete IT operational views into a comprehensive single pane of glass view. It uses advanced log analytics, multivariate KPI analytics, and incident recognition systems to enable IT organizations to work on critical problems instead of firefighting with multiple noise events. Also, it improves the IT organization's decision-making capability and helps them address the business requirements very effectively. Moreover, it helps to evolve the automation level of the IT organization into the next level of cognitive automation.

What is the difference between DevOps and AIOps?

AIOps and DevOps are actually different but can combine to achieve a better business outcome. DevOps is a combination of cultural philosophies, practices, and tools, and AIOps is a technology that enhances productivity and reduces the cost through automation. DevOps improves the speed of service delivery. AIOps eliminate human errors and system-generated problems and save time.

What is the future of AIOps?

AIOps is not a technology; it is a new IT operations methodology. It applies artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to current IT operations and improves the decision-making capability of the IT organization to improve their productivity. Also, it enhances the automation to the next level. The above benefits will force enterprises to adopt AIOps. Most global enterprises will strategically implement an AIOps platform supporting two or more major IT operation functions. It’s time for you to start using IT operations that strategically leverage AIOps platforms. The AIOps platforms will help you run along with the business, instead of being stuck in the firefighting mode.

Summary

Adoption and investment to the AIOps platform can be easily justifiable because IT teams can quickly highlight the cost savings and productivity improvement in their business case. It is easy to convince the CEO and your CFO that AI will bring real value to the IT department, and the future has potential.
